Hey gang, Farmboy here.
Remember me? I’m the whirling dervish who adds spice and spunk to life here at Farmgirl Follies. Mommy — aka The Farmgirl — is recovering from an episode.

I’m taking over  … sort of like I did way back in the summer. You can read about that episode here.

Anyway, I decided I’d tell you about the episode. My perspective is much more interesting anyhow. My mommy would probably just tell you that she faces an hour-long trial by terror every Wednesday. I’m the trial, in case you didn’t know.

Public persecution.
You see, every week my sisters have piano lessons. That means Mommy & I have to sit and wait for 60 minutes. I don’t mind. The music center is a great place and there are cool instruments everywhere. Dave, the man who runs the store, even puts his guitars and drum sets at floor level — perfect for my groping hands.

Mommy doesn’t allow me to touch the beautiful things, however.

You’d think she would be more supportive of my musical abilities!

Keeping busy.
Usually I bring my tractors or Matchbox cars to piano lessons. I carry them in a little lunchbox and there’s always a snack. Except yesterday. Mommy forgot it.

I had no toys to entertain me in a store full of beautiful musical instruments. Good times!

Blondie tried to teach me magic tricks. Then it was her turn for a lesson and my other sister came to sit with us. She wanted to read her book. I wasn’t interested in anything Mommy wanted to do.

I just wanted to bang on some drums or strum some chords on guitars or run from one end of the store to the other. It’s SUCH a great place!

Mommy said no. Emphatically. And that made me mad … and I’ll admit it. I started having a tantrum, right there in the middle of the music store. I didn’t care that my carrying on might interrupt the violin, guitar or piano lessons taking place in the other rooms.

But Mommy cared.

And then she did the only thing she could under such circumstances … she handed me a quarter.

Can you believe it?
My mother started feeding me candy to make me be quiet. I didn’t even mind sitting on the chair like a good boy after that! Why would I, with a handful of M&Ms on the table!

Before I knew it, it was time to go home. Much to Mommy’s relief.

The whole episode was really stressful. I needed to decompress when we got home. And you know the old saying, Calgon, take me away!

lessonbath

I took a bubble bath. Mommy made supper. I think she just wanted to keep an eye on me, but I didn’t mind. I love baths in the kitchen sink. And in case you’re wondering … I think Mommy keeps those cacti on the windowsill for my benefit. For some reason, the sight of those prickly pears keeps me sitting in the sink instead of standing up and playing Tarzan.

Mommy’s pretty smart.

And she needs to refocus and relax, too.

Merry Chrismas and happy new year!

Love,
Farmboy!

It has taken me three decades and three kids to understand something I learned at age 3.

Forget Calgon and bubble baths and massages and chocolate. They don’t really solve the melancholy when life is overwhelming and the chaos begins to overshadow the joy. What you really need to do is kick off your shoes, head outside and hop on a swing.

Point your toes to the sky.

Feel the rush of the wind.

Revel in the warm sunshine on your face.

Before you know it, you’re smiling.

See … they know the secret to happiness.

And why should they be the only ones to enjoy the to and fro?
