Brown baggin’ it
I have logged more miles today than I care to admit.
The kids loaded up and we were headed for groceries by 7 a.m. (Remember, they voluntarily get up in time to see the stars fade.) When I got to the end of the lane I realized the dog was absent when we left. By the time I found him and he skulked into the house in an aura of BIG trouble, it was nearly 8 a.m. and scorchingly hot. And I’d like to make an admission of guilt …
I drove straight to Lowe’s to buy an air conditioner.
And while one child was hanging off the cart yelling, “Push me faster!” to his sisters, I inquired about these new-fangled appliances that turn houses into Eden.
“I recommend this model,” the man stated matter-of-factly.
“Can you tell me why?”
“It’s the only model in stock.” And he wasn’t making a joke.
Uh. Huh. Hmmm. So it’s the only one left because everyone else bought the OTHER brand. Right. I did not purchase an air conditioner this morning. I did, however, select a very nice fan with a photo of icebergs on the box. If I stare at it long enough maybe I’ll fool myself into a state of cool.
We returned home, put the groceries away and headed out again for the feed mill. This time in the opposite direction. The kids love the feed mill. They get to walk behind the counter and select a sucker from the box.
Ordered … loaded … shushed arguing children … headed for home.
We’d only gone a mile when I realized I ordered the wrong corn.Thank goodness it’s called the Farmer’s Exchange, because I had to do a switcheroo.
And then we went home.
For a little while.
Piano lessons in a couple of hours, but first the pig pen needs a cleaning. The girls are at it now but I can hear an argument in progress. Their voices echo off the barn. I’m thinking, “Don’t make me come up there!” and “I should just go up there and do it myself.”
But I didn’t … I won’t.
Responsibility — even on a hot, sunny day — is the greatest lesson to be learned. And I’m hoping at least somebody around here can get something accomplished this afternoon. I’m going to squeeze in a little laundry, a little copy-writing and a little beef marketing over the next few hours.
Wish me luck! It seems to be one of those ‘running around in circles’ kind of days. But at least everyone will eat tonight.
If I get around to making supper, that is.
