Twigg Winery opens Saturday
Twigg Winery will host a grand opening Saturday, Nov. 12, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Visitors can enjoy a simple wine tasting flight and purchase wine by the glass, bottle or case. You can stand and sip, relax in a table by the window or in nice weather, enjoy the views from the patio and surrounding hillsides. You are welcome to bring your own cheeses, crackers and snacks to enjoy with Twigg Wines.
Last weekend I helped label wine bottles. While our hands were busy we chewed the fat a bit … my brother, sister-in-law and I. “So how does it feel to have a dream and see it come true?” I asked.
He just grinned and said, “It hasn’t happened yet!”
It’s darned close, though. Come on out and support a local, family-owned business built on a whole lot of dreaming and hard work! Trust me, I’ve watched. It took years and years of effort to get from planting rootstock to slapping labels on beautiful bottles of liquid delight. I think he even mixed a trip to Germany’s wine regions with the Ohio Grape Growers in their somewhere. He has studied and experienced and together, they have worked hard in the dirt.
I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Currently, they offer four wines. The peach and apple wines are made from fresh, hand-picked Manfull Orchards fruit. The red and white table wines are made from local hybrid grapes. He’ll have hard cider soon. Also growing in the vineyard: Traminette, Chardonel, Frontenac, Edelweiss, Noiret, Riesling, Lemberger and Dornfelder.
We were labeling peach the other night.
To “finish” the bottles, my sister-in-law put capsules (the foil wrappers) on the tops of every bottle, then she laid them one at a time into that metal contraption. There’s a hot coil at the end that shrink-wraps the capsules around the top of the bottle and cork. It takes a couple of seconds. Then the bottle is passed on to whoever happens to be placing the labels.
This is where the magic happens.
And you can taste the result if you stop at the Twigg on Saturday. Next week they’ll begin regular hours: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
