Truly, madly, deeply

I’m reading a book that rocks my world with every turn of the page.

He’s reading a historical novel about the Civil War. Two wonderful, but dramatically different works read by two very different people. He retired to his favorite easy chair in the quiet family room, alone at last. Wanting to be near him after a workday apart, I got cozy on the couch and cracked open my own book. Mine is a call to action, an inspiration — I can do nothing but read passage after passage aloud, eager to share my enthusiasm with my beloved.

He’s patient. He stopped reading to concentrate on my excited chatter. He answered every question I carelessly tossed into the air between us … What if? Why do you think? Did you know?

He never turns away. He doesn’t even ask that I kindly shut my trap.

He listens, always.

Always & forever

At the start of this great compromise we determined to love unconditionally; respect and honor always; devote years and decades to each other without regret, remorse or wrong-doing. We’ve been traveling this road for 14 years. There are bumps and potholes and speed traps and winding, dark and twisty turns. We’re constantly under construction. It helps avoid the alternative … destruction.

This man, he is the object of my desire and affection.

He is both strong and vulnerable, stern and tender.

He is solace for my soul and reviving air when I can’t breathe.

He is a safe harbor in turbulent tides …

My rock in shifting sand.

No, it’s not his birthday, nor is it our anniversary. Yes, yes he is dying and so am I — aren’t we all?

That’s why this matters so much, why getting it right is so vitally important, even on ordinary days. They matter most — those ordinary days in the ordinary existence of a real housewife from Carroll County.

Be ye thankful … I am thankful, daily, that God picked him for me.

And no matter what occurs in other areas of our together life, I can honestly say:

I’m a happy wife.
