Barnyard birthing suite

I can’t tell you how many births I’ve rushed off to photograph, only to arrive 30 seconds too late. The kids happened to be present for this particular grand event, so that’s all that really matters. Births are something everyone should see. In my experience, nothing puts things into perspective like watching a new life enter the world.

Mamas and their newborns. Whatever the species, it’s still a tender thing to behold — at least where mammals are concerned. I can’t really speak to the rest of the animal kingdom, though in my experience birds seem to devote their lives to their babies. Speaking of motherly affection, the licking began right away. It has several purposes as you can see in this funny little video I made. I hope it gives you reason to smile!

I never tire of watching a new birth. Our cows are moved into a birthing pasture next to our farmhouse. I cannot always make it to barn or trees when they give birth. I love it when we arrive on time. Nothing sweeter and more exciting…
