Button up and offer freely – Love Notes {Day 24}

Grandma's advice taped to my cabinet door.

I was just in from the barn this morning and the house was still dark and quiet. On a quest for oatmeal I yanked open the cabinet door and came face to face with my Grandma’s timeworn advice. It’s always there — this scrap of paper taped to the inside of my baking cupboard. This hastily scribbled poem continues to promote kindness and goodwill long after her physical presence no longer can.

She was always making note of quotes and sayings, sage advice and biblical passages. They were taped to her refrigerator, stuck inside her Bible and often, tucked inside a letter or card, sent on occasion or just because.

Today I received this love note, anew. My eyes were opened once again by the simple truth scratched on a slip of paper who knows when …

Button up your lip securely
‘gainst the words that bring a tear.
But be swift with words of comfort,
Words of praise and words of cheer.

Great advice for anyone, but especially wives and mothers. Because mornings are hectic and demands are high. We may be the last stop of loving shelter our children experience today. We may be the last kind and understanding word our husbands encounter in a fast-paced world of achievement and production. We’re the comfort in an often cold and seemingly harsh world. We need to remember that, so we can give freely every chance we get. Because everyone, everywhere, needs more words of praise and comfort and cheer!

Thanks for reminding me, Grandma.
