Fixer Upper Marathon
The dogs are on some kind of mixed-up schedule. For a week now, they’ve been whining and barking at 4 a.m. I usually get up about 5, but still! I appreciate that last hour of sleep. The routine continued this morning, but today I hopped out of bed, dressed and headed to the coffee pot. Dogs out, devotions read, thoughts pondered, and on to the washing machine. There I began a downward spiral into cleaning mode that transformed itself into a whirlwind of purging.
I cleaned the washing machine with a toothbrush. Who does that?! Please say you do … because how else do you get the gunky grime out of the edge of the lid? And I cleaned bathrooms and sucked up cobwebs from bedroom corners, and gathered the too small, too worn and ready to move on garments in trash bags. All said and done, the kids and I took seven bags of stuff to the donation center. All the kids have shot up and out this summer. And really, it was time for those shoes to go … how much longer would I pretend I could walk in them?!
I feel … lighter. I can breathe easier. Life has been feeling a bit cluttered. Discarding some of it in any form was a great way to treat the symptoms. We dropped off our bags, stopped for lunch and then headed home before the man of the house arrived. He’s been gone for a week. At the moment, he and the kids are out in the yard playing some kind of messed up football. There is much shrieking and screaming. There is laughter and yelling. It’s music to my ears. I’m sitting here in my clean house enjoying the quiet (even with the occasional cheer from the yard).
I’m also zoning out by watching a show called Fixer Upper. Have you seen it? It’s on HGTV and I LOVE IT!!! Chip and Joanna Gaines live in Texas. They buy and sell houses, and even better, Joanna remodels and redecorates ‘fixer uppers’. Not only is the show great, but I love the Gaines family, too. They’re funny. They’re real. And they make a great team. Check it out if you haven’t seen it! New episodes air on Thursdays at 9, but you can watch previous episodes on Saturday afternoons or Thursdays at 8. So there’s my free plug for a great show. It’ll make you want to buy a can of paint, take off for the nearest antique store and move all the furniture!
Or, clean the washing machine with a toothbrush. Either way, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something!
Merry weekend, friends! Hope yours is productive and happy and filled with inspiration.
