Don’t You Dare

Memorial DayIt’s a reprimand for me, my children, my family. It’s a reminder for you and for every citizen or non-citizen living in these United States of America. Don’t dare forget that our lives — however idyllic and ordinary, peaceful and painful — are happening because of God, and the men and women who serve and protect us each and every minute of every day.

We remember to thank God. Do we remember to thank those on guard?

Memorial Day is not about picnics and barbecues. Those things do occur and that’s fine and dandy as long as we remember why. It’s not to celebrate a long weekend; it’s to cherish the freedom to gather when we choose. It’s to thankfully consider those who gave their lives to create the atmosphere in which we live, the present environment we take for granted.

Stop, please. Stop right now and pray for those in the military. And be sure to pray for their families, too. I don’t have a clue what it must be like to live a “normal” life while my spouse or child is on the front lines. I can’t comprehend such a burden — but it’s my duty to support those who do. And it’s my responsibility to pray.

Prayer is what I can do. It’s what we can contribute.

And it will make all the difference in the world.

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. ~ Colossians 4:2
