We Deck the Halls With Soggy Sheet Music

Everyone in the blogosphere and on social media is all “Look at my gorgeous and stunning Christmas decor!” and I’m standing over here in my living room like, “Hey, you can use leftover ornament hooks to air dry sopping wet sheet music!” What?! Yeah. It’s been one of those days.

For the last week I’ve had a pain in the neck. Basically, the muscles are all swollen and strained, causing me to hold my head in a twisted position. It’s painful to move, my scalp is pounding, and it feels like I have a massive earache/sinus infection. Except it’s a pain in the neck. There is ice involved. And a hot water bottle … which leads to my current predicament.

My son surmised a hot water bottle would help him complete his math homework. There was a stack of piano sheet music on the computer desk. One thing led to another and well, now the sheet music is soggy and our halls are decked with a ramshackle clothesline.

It’s ok. Yeah, I put up a tree the day after Thanksgiving. There’s a wreath on the fence at the end of the lane. The rest of the house? It’s not yet decorated but take note! (Get it, take note?!) The drippy music man and his sisters are fine with that. Because 1) the sun is shining and Thanksgiving was just a few days ago, and 2) they haven’t yet noticed the pre-Christmas fervor that has captured everyone and everything and every store.

There is still time … for sheet music, decorating, planning, living in the moment.

And yeah, time for me to consciously stretch this season into a slow and relaxing family experience, minus the fervor that steals joy and the reason for the season. So tell me, what are you doing to put the brakes on and savor every moment of this sparkling season?

    Jennifer,
I hope you get your pain in the neck figured out. That doesn’t sound good or fun.

I’m not an over the top Christmas person. I put up and tree and start listening to holiday music around December 15th.

The way society has commercialized Christmas is sad. I think we need to spend time with family, go to Church and keep things simple.

Thanks, Robyn! I agree – sometimes I think “society” has taken every good thing and found a way to exploit it. Thankfully, we can be mindful and intentional, and avoid all of the hullabaloo, if we want to. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
